Barbara grew up in Blackstone, Virginia and graduated from the then Blackstone High School. As an adult, she furthered her education and received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Accounting, from the University of Richmond; passed the licensing requirements to be a Certified Public Accountant; then obtaining her Master of Taxation from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Barbara began her accounting career at Coopers & Lybrand, one of the ‘Big 6” in Richmond, Virginia. After leaving C&L, Barbara worked at a local CPA firm which later merged with Goodman & Company. In 2006, she and her husband made Blackstone their primary residence rather than a weekend getaway and Barbara Y. Gibbs & Associates, Inc. became a reality. Barbara and her staff are members of the VSCPA (Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants) and the firm is a member of the AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants).
Barbara has been a volunteer for DBi since 2008. She has served on the board as a member of the Economic Restructuring Committee. Some of her other community involvements include serving on the board for the Nottoway Youth Football Association, and The Blackstone Chamber of Commerce. Barbara has worked hard with the Chamber since 2007. She has been Treasurer, Vice Chairperson, Chairperson, 2 years back to back, and now Past Chair. Amongst her other volunteer services she also serves on the Finance Committee at Crenshaw United Methodist Church.
The staff members at Barbara Y. Gibbs & Associates are also involved with various organizations where they donate their time. Just to name a few they are the Crewe-Burkeville Recreation Association, Dream Makers Dance Team, 4-H Shooting Sports, and the Blackstone Chamber of Commerce.
